Springfield Track Club Head Coach, Eric Chavez, is married to his beautiful wife, Julie, and has 3 children: Creighton, Hayden, and Reagan. He has a Bachelor's Degree in History and Government, a Bachelor's Degree in Physician Assistant Studies, and a Master's Degree in Physician Assistant Studies. Eric is a 13 year Veteran of the United States Army, where he entered as a Private and earned the rank of 1st Lieutenant prior to exiting service.
Eric is a proud native of Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was here that his lifelong obsession with running began at the age of 8, when he competed in his first race. He graduated from La Cueva High School, where he had the privilege of being coached by the now nationally known Coach Matt Henry. During this time, he competed in both regional and national USATF competitions. Eric competed in track and cross country at both New Mexico Junior College, and New Mexico State. In 1989, Eric joined the U.S. Army where his talent for running was quickly discovered, and he began representing the Army in races around the country. Upon returning to the civilian world, Eric began competing in triathlons. He has completed 4 Ironman Triathlons (Wisconsin, Florida, and Arizona (twice!). He has also completed numerous 1/2 Iron distance triathlons, Olympic distance triathlons, sprint triathlons, duathlons, and marathons.
In addition to competing personally in running, Eric has been a lifelong, voracious, STUDENT of everything running. He has extensively studied every aspect of running, to include: the science of running, the psychology of running, nutrition in running, and sports injury (which is greatly aided by his 13 years of medical experience in the U.S. Army , and his 19 years as a Physician Assistant working in Orthopedics, Orthopedic / Spine surgery and Neurological surgery). Eric is on an unending endeavor to improve his knowledge of running , and to stay up to date with the current, scientific based knowledge leading current running theory. He currently holds the following certifications
- USTFCCCA Endurance Event Specialist
- USTFCCCA Strength and Conditioning Specialist
- USATF Level 1 Coach
Eric started Springfield Track Club in 2009 to bring his love of running to local youth that might not otherwise have the opportunity to compete. His sole purpose in coaching, is to give them the same opportunities he was given, and to show them all the advantages that can come with running. Eric believes that all of life's important lessons can be learned/taught through running: The importance of hard work and preparation, the thrill of victory (and yes..) the agony of defeat, the importance of believing in yourself, and the belief that running can take you places (literally) in life, you never thought you could go. Eric is happiest on a track, or a LONG trail, and considers the opportunity to share his love for the sport of running with others a true blessing from God.
